Built by people who'd rather be on the road.
Detourist started the way most good weekend trips do — with someone tired of the same three "top places near me" listicles, wondering what was actually down that side road nobody writes about. Google Maps will get you to a pin. It won't tell you if a hatchback survives the last two kilometers, whether there's any signal once you're there, or if the "waterfall" is even flowing this month. That gap — between a dot on a map and actually knowing what you're driving into — is the whole reason this exists.
It's built the way a lot of things worth trusting are built: slowly, by people who actually go to these places, not by scraping listings or chasing SEO. No ads deciding what you see first. No sponsored pins pretending to be recommendations. Just real places, added and vouched for by people who've been there — at a much smaller scale, but in the same spirit as things like Wikipedia: a shared, growing record built by the people who use it, not bought by the people who'd like you to see it.
It'll never be finished. That's the point — every weekend someone takes a detour worth remembering adds one more place to the map.
What it does today
- Search for places by how much driving time you're up for (say, "under 2 hours from home") and see them all on a map.
- Planning a road trip from one city to another? Detourist can show you interesting spots that are actually on the way, not miles off your path.
- Looking for something dog-friendly, a quiet trail, a family-friendly weekend spot, or somewhere with zero cell signal to really disconnect? Filter by the kind of experience you want.
- Every place has real practical details: can you get there in a regular car or do you need an SUV/4x4, is there parking, restrooms, drinking water, how's the phone signal (Jio/Airtel/Vi), how far is the nearest railway station or highway — the stuff that actually matters when you're planning a trip to somewhere off the beaten path.
- Real photos and last-mile directions ("turn left after the petrol pump...") for each place.
- Detourist works as a Progressive Web App, so you can add it to your phone's home screen and open it like any other app, no app store needed.

Right now, a small group of trusted local scouts and I are adding places directly, based on real visits.

If you've been somewhere worth the detour — a dhaba with no signboard, a trail nobody's posted about, a swimming hole that's only good three months a year — submit it. It goes through the same process every place on Detourist does: a real submission, checked and vouched for, not an instant unmoderated post. That's deliberate — the whole value of this place is that you can trust what's on it.
Already visited somewhere listed here? Vouching for it — confirming it's still accurate, flagging what's changed — is just as valuable as adding something new. A map that isn't kept honest over time isn't worth much.
